SAM
So, you want me to spill my guts or something? Tell you my whole life story?
PAUL
... something tells me you don't want to.
SAM
Can't force me to do that much, pal. Not within five minutes.
PAUL
Can I ask you a question?
SAM
Can you?
PAUL
You weren't this harsh when I was writing you last summer...
SAM
If you can't take it, write some poem about the fall leaves. I'm done with fake shit.
PAUL
What's 'fake shit'?
SAM
It's people like you pretending to take interest in me for a moment, only to find out it's politeness, it's structure, it's rigour —
[SAM freezes mid-sentence.]
PAUL
Cat got your tongue?
SAM
Don't start. You're not funny, you're not smart.
PAUL
Jeez, okay. Let's just try to understand each other better. What does structure and rigour have to do with anything?
[SAM pauses for a moment, thinking.]
SAM
Have I ever told you about the nature of the human heart?
PAUL
Not that I can recall.
SAM
The human heart the centre of a river system, a pulse, a geyser, a comet's trail... in fewer metaphor, the human heart is but one confluence of desires and intuition.
A lone human heart cannot accomplish much. But a tree planted by a river will bear much fruit. That is to say...
PAUL
There is some kind of 'source' we can tap into?
SAM
Right, that's right, you call this "source." Others: "love", "God", "fate", "energy", and so on. You get all these new-age folks talking about "frequencies" and such - and they're almost onto something.
PAUL
What, are you saying the human heart has a frequency? Or a resonant frequency?
SAM
... I don't know what I'm saying.
[SAM pauses.]
SAM
Just some thoughts, I guess.
